Between work projects, between debilitating periods, between other creative distractions, or sometimes as creative distraction from other things.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">It's indulgent, undirected, unprofessional, and entirely unnecessary. They look like party lanterns, even after picking. I tried my best to ignore this fact for over a year. Finally, I STUPIDed and tried to see how quickly I could make some for the Bug Party set. The answer was, not that quickly. Took me several days, on top of trying to slog through multiple other really STUPID tasks. But here we are done. Changing the color from reds to pinks to not compete with the party mushroom tables, I kind of just glued the edges of tissue paper petal shapes together around a stiff floral wire. The inner tip of it was studded with chopped yellow cord.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I found <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CGZYHRN7?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1" target="_blank">1/2" round waterproof balloon lights </a>that could be turned off and on by inserting a tiny blade between its batteries. (normally, I avoid battery-op things for environmental reasons, but I caved from the lust to make these and use the extras to tuck unwired lights everywhere, like <a href="https://notesfromhalfland.blogspot.com/2011/10/look-at-dat-one.html" target="_blank">candles</a>!) I wrapped yellow tissue paper skirts around the lights and fit them inside the outer flower, shaded everything with watercolor, sealed with matte medium, and thought they were done.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Nope! Apparently, I also needed to make tiny bead bugs to stick their butts into the flowers, causing them to light up for the party. So STUPID of me. But they didn't take much time at all. Just chose sets of random beads, ran 30 gauge steel wire through the centers in three passes, trimmed wires to leg lengths, threaded a bit through the head beads, glued both parts together, added tiny black paint feet to the legs, added four little vellum wings and dots for eyes, glued them onto the green tissue paper wrapped flower interiors, directly on top of the brightest tip of the lights, and boom.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Dammit, they're going to look great in that <a href="https://notesfromhalfland.blogspot.com/2016/07/bug-me-little.html" target="_blank">scene</a>.</span></span></p><p></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbCAPkurC0KwygkhOYJcmYuUQmrfl7MMImv7oYwM7rV5ezluf2cO2-6nESOZ16XEQj1Bj_C4vkGi1Now1mlZ7FEwEvaHYjoUnkIPvjYHBK097qD3dnX8WYwnn2Du21N3z_qBg101luokM8bF3-S49nKrvnx6KOnvJ1rPkKwSDs8BECmDqVUl4w/s950/flower%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="950" data-original-width="720" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbCAPkurC0KwygkhOYJcmYuUQmrfl7MMImv7oYwM7rV5ezluf2cO2-6nESOZ16XEQj1Bj_C4vkGi1Now1mlZ7FEwEvaHYjoUnkIPvjYHBK097qD3dnX8WYwnn2Du21N3z_qBg101luokM8bF3-S49nKrvnx6KOnvJ1rPkKwSDs8BECmDqVUl4w/w486-h640/flower%201.jpg" width="486" /></a><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></p>Shelley Noblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10968333057020378002noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25158433.post-90682529235574848662024-02-08T13:28:00.000-08:002024-02-08T13:28:13.937-08:00Backdrop Artistry<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhsyEirVbVuUzcnT_CdsmQSMt162VSjuVskem7DOtdvGzVKhRMP6VENQcso5byJIO8tkes8x64ySto6mQgMzZqrI-60mYkqgDrC4A7woIqiwjl7YY3MNB7uuXi2rjTpDQ1exGsXmL5gylQzWAv1jD2FvCpHhOCNdfGqzMH8xnUnjeH2KTxp3doI" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1293" data-original-width="1001" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhsyEirVbVuUzcnT_CdsmQSMt162VSjuVskem7DOtdvGzVKhRMP6VENQcso5byJIO8tkes8x64ySto6mQgMzZqrI-60mYkqgDrC4A7woIqiwjl7YY3MNB7uuXi2rjTpDQ1exGsXmL5gylQzWAv1jD2FvCpHhOCNdfGqzMH8xnUnjeH2KTxp3doI=s16000" /></a></div><i><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Just came across these images of English actress Y Fitzroy taken by portraitist Alexander Bassano. At top, you see the complete book in spreads in page order. It's glorious to see as a whole, and again, I'll say that to me, it's one of the most exquisite works of art ever made. What I wanted to point out is how the Dare used the spread. She didn't crop the images to the spine but rather extended past it to cover 2/3 of each spread along with a slender column of the story's text. Image rules in this book, to be sure. But how much less impactful would each incredible image have been had they cropped to fit the ratio of the book? The out-sized smash in your face of her full compositions sinks in down to the bone for me.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There were variations on how each image was used, some set to the right of the text, some to the left, and some spreads held two images as if cinematic frames, moving the narrative action forward. Each spread's layout was considered individually for its most potent result.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I will always remember her example and let my images be shown in the way they most need to be seen.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-PwbXHMMvx2nVqePqJuZ85S30gW63at1fF7l6mvic4NhWFB7dU1q4YF0LqZxmWYW6K98SQ0zMJtju7J3nxVAvbMnplsKFwT3AvbqTn-2NtnysFb3CDdB_gaWHCtxgarsg0812Qe9YYSO3OzuG6yGTJHMWZP4ClkARBb77i3talKCVh5X7YNC7/s4160/20240114_113806_HDR.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-PwbXHMMvx2nVqePqJuZ85S30gW63at1fF7l6mvic4NhWFB7dU1q4YF0LqZxmWYW6K98SQ0zMJtju7J3nxVAvbMnplsKFwT3AvbqTn-2NtnysFb3CDdB_gaWHCtxgarsg0812Qe9YYSO3OzuG6yGTJHMWZP4ClkARBb77i3talKCVh5X7YNC7/w480-h640/20240114_113806_HDR.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Dick was kind enough to come over to take a look at my gimbal. </i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: left;">I could not balance my live-action shooting camera on it to even see whether it was working. <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">Now that the Window Seat set is finally finished, I started blocking the Lacemaking Spider's shots as a director. Even though the puppet wasn't fully dressed, He was installed for his scene in the cottage attic; he's tied down to a small board, covered with a white stretch lace stocking that will move with his eight arms as they appear to weave the pattern.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCgIBlt6KtGA6fRLbswgzNVMdgms9bzrE5iTxOwpQvVS73sBouP1l53h9kIlqwdSdr6Z4CHe2_Vp0-IzPgYXnSCq1U51lJf2turYl2mBjcKr1E0UOki8PNIs9vsl4k2Y758kC-YX1EKl7PeE2gMhCPsTvI3kjmTcf-0FQWWzkWeCVUIjIi1GK8/s2048/P1020599.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCgIBlt6KtGA6fRLbswgzNVMdgms9bzrE5iTxOwpQvVS73sBouP1l53h9kIlqwdSdr6Z4CHe2_Vp0-IzPgYXnSCq1U51lJf2turYl2mBjcKr1E0UOki8PNIs9vsl4k2Y758kC-YX1EKl7PeE2gMhCPsTvI3kjmTcf-0FQWWzkWeCVUIjIi1GK8/w640-h426/P1020599.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here, he sits by the half-web twig mullion window in the moonlight, busy with his labors of designing webs of various laces. It was more interesting (and true to me) that</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #b45f06; font-size: large;">a spider would tend to be </span><span style="color: #990000; font-size: x-large;">more comfortable a bit hidden behind things</span><span style="color: #b45f06; font-size: large;"> rather than working straight out in the open.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #b45f06; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So, when blocking the shots, it was important to reveal the spider slowly by showing all the sundries stored around his workspace first. It seemed more true to his nature to stay shy, even if he is wearing a top hat.</div><br /> <p></p>Shelley Noblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10968333057020378002noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25158433.post-40824559328005235232023-11-10T00:18:00.003-08:002023-11-11T13:06:55.871-08:00Get the Details<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVv2mzZVNhl1FU25JA_exC2_b3Ex2RgvUt3UGsBhb9J4HPKOlr6eakyzFvv62dElSg4OQGxo0PNdeZlFGIvdkX1aur1zqLg1wDFuA_Ze9rE7N8v8dhLd-14D3V80F_DE1siTZ6T8feQgbW0Rb3hM-8NGt6fjjl_3ybVw2LBCj2VxtDtJ71Nfmu/s6000/P1020782.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVv2mzZVNhl1FU25JA_exC2_b3Ex2RgvUt3UGsBhb9J4HPKOlr6eakyzFvv62dElSg4OQGxo0PNdeZlFGIvdkX1aur1zqLg1wDFuA_Ze9rE7N8v8dhLd-14D3V80F_DE1siTZ6T8feQgbW0Rb3hM-8NGt6fjjl_3ybVw2LBCj2VxtDtJ71Nfmu/w640-h426/P1020782.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Straight from the camera, I can get a glimpse of the storybook poetry Halfland props and sets can provide. Here, the little tea tray settled on a cushette in the window seat set at Dusk, features the translucent nature of the berries yet gently blurs the closer cup of lemon slices. The handmade Tudor window with twig mullions offers just the right amount of obscured view. I Googled it, piqued, I ordered an inexpensive set, got them in the post the next day, and started messing about with them. Watched just one <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiFQj7XuKgQ" target="_blank">excellent video</a> on how they can be used, and have been practicing everyday since. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">How they couple with my beloved Plane Tilt lens is astonishing for me. I'm able to control the images in a fully empowering way, not just what part of it can be most sharply focused, but also the amount of vignetting. (The tubes darken the view so more light is needed.) I start with the exposure depending on how much light is present on the subject, set the ISO accordingly, low for darker circumstances and higher for lighter, then I use a ranging technique (well explained in the video linked) to find the precise focal length in each shot. It's doubly tricky but exactly what I needed.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Imagine, the chance of catching that YT short to learn about these, only to discover they are the magic vehicle getting me where I needed to go. Attached the flange to a thin hardwood plank and made a quick hardwood floor effect in case the camera angle for the scene shows the floor. It's not running in the correct direction to match the cottage floor it'll be on when the wall is added into place, but if I need to shoot the sequence away from the main set, it'll give me a downward texture. I must remember that something far away from the puppet, like the floor, will only appear like a blurry, hardwood floor-colored smear with my AstrHori Plane Tilt Lens, so no need to fuss. #marathonsprint<div><br /></div><div>Bottom right shows the finished window seat wall set featuring the hanging cloak with the mouse's rigging already hidden underneath it.</div></div>Shelley Noblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10968333057020378002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25158433.post-51053607976308302282023-11-04T23:27:00.001-07:002023-11-04T23:27:20.170-07:00Hooked On You<p style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp2QWRV2QNSkMf-r3kpf-XApbcvngV0mP3hlM4YuTHwYmYWEFfInbi5yjqBk47vexD0lBJ2RC0vCK1Xwk_vLNu6hZ4zUT2q8x-Hu3nbH-5KCsARm4wppWKfJWNdMOtfdE6AsevrxdFwWbULb2ZwbO1mriNjiqJvUfhWrmOOOkhb9cJims1S1meVFuKa3VC/s4160/20231024_161430.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp2QWRV2QNSkMf-r3kpf-XApbcvngV0mP3hlM4YuTHwYmYWEFfInbi5yjqBk47vexD0lBJ2RC0vCK1Xwk_vLNu6hZ4zUT2q8x-Hu3nbH-5KCsARm4wppWKfJWNdMOtfdE6AsevrxdFwWbULb2ZwbO1mriNjiqJvUfhWrmOOOkhb9cJims1S1meVFuKa3VC/w300-h400/20231024_161430.jpg" width="300" /></a></p><div style="text-align: center;">Once I knew the mouse needed to shimmy into the cloak pocket when trouble hits, I knew I needed a strong hook made to scale to hang it on. This detail branch is removable to stay out of the way for certain interior shots.<p></p><p>Some of these leaves were initially painted in green for Summer, then gold when I thought that's how you knew your Answer was ready to be read. But in making this, I thought it better to make them mostly autumnal with only slight flecks of gold at the tips as a more subtle suggestion of their true value.</p><p>A few leaves were made straight up from brown paper and wire, and even I can't tell which. You can peep an Answer written in an intuitive scripting (no language). My fondest hope for a lasting effect of seeing Halfland will be that people will never look at a falling leaf the same again. That they'll always look closer to see if an Answer has been given to them there.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ9Qf4In696nzlkXcG4zDru7XrZzGQhR4PBNLiqIge0hujaGwLkyd5n4RJA0Gu86jAhG9ty6isuagWvKdFKnc7bxQ6kDfmJBcakxhL3mXql-z23xM8r1-Gy37vARpgpl9c5LsNmpXF59N2ZtooX8IQHN71ubNveK2tYmvXqrKVfcOH2-4z7hAf/s3000/autumn%20branch%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="2000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ9Qf4In696nzlkXcG4zDru7XrZzGQhR4PBNLiqIge0hujaGwLkyd5n4RJA0Gu86jAhG9ty6isuagWvKdFKnc7bxQ6kDfmJBcakxhL3mXql-z23xM8r1-Gy37vARpgpl9c5LsNmpXF59N2ZtooX8IQHN71ubNveK2tYmvXqrKVfcOH2-4z7hAf/w266-h400/autumn%20branch%202.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFtfTQgQHWw2G_uxQJ53z5_uSvemQrZLeo3cdGtMxdfZg8XIasW2qEcx8Q4Kg3igLXiBp7qrAan6piQihbAsekuBCf8YEH6_R1tpLJbDLBN3MngemG9Wb_pCwIXMN7f7lW6zwKfZS8wqtkwcCfDphrw0KYyfnUzBjBtU9d5eYxjom0KRGGulov/s3000/autumn%20branch%203.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="2000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFtfTQgQHWw2G_uxQJ53z5_uSvemQrZLeo3cdGtMxdfZg8XIasW2qEcx8Q4Kg3igLXiBp7qrAan6piQihbAsekuBCf8YEH6_R1tpLJbDLBN3MngemG9Wb_pCwIXMN7f7lW6zwKfZS8wqtkwcCfDphrw0KYyfnUzBjBtU9d5eYxjom0KRGGulov/w266-h400/autumn%20branch%203.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7GtcpESwoqksqJPWbzlSkecwMjrsmiFhyzIoKBMZKFVEbdKtzfSJ8UHwcBRAqFLJQJ2EuXbzzIA9kJfUHe1ztepS0eitP2Y0qzkst7Jt8Xo-oVL485vG4K2R4udWZO0vqSsE6Gp7tFqYN4QrnHiKadUIwKMCMf_epKe8YM67-sjcX-OAtqdgL/s2100/autumn%20branch%20in%20cottage%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1400" data-original-width="2100" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7GtcpESwoqksqJPWbzlSkecwMjrsmiFhyzIoKBMZKFVEbdKtzfSJ8UHwcBRAqFLJQJ2EuXbzzIA9kJfUHe1ztepS0eitP2Y0qzkst7Jt8Xo-oVL485vG4K2R4udWZO0vqSsE6Gp7tFqYN4QrnHiKadUIwKMCMf_epKe8YM67-sjcX-OAtqdgL/w400-h266/autumn%20branch%20in%20cottage%202.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Here's the finished branch installed into its place inside the finished cottage set. PURE STORY MAGIC!!<p></p><p>It was like seeing the story beginning to come to actual life in a way I hadn't anticipated. Writing out the shot list, it became clear the mouse would be having a little sequence of getting into the cloak pocket, knowing his friends would be taking off right away to the Golden Desert to get help for the stricken Tarn.</p><p>He didn't want to take a chance that they'd get underway without him. The bottom shot above previews what a cut-away shot may look like as they trek into the lambent setting sun.</p><p>Above that are my test shots of him with various camera settings and character positions, some in the persimmon top hat, some without, some with an oak gall, always wearing his glasses. I've misplaced his journal and quill (:(), but if I don't locate where I put them, I have all the materials to make him another. </p><p>This character is Memory, and he writes down everything that takes place around him. So, an important adventure like this is always welcome.</p><p>Seeing this, the finished mouse puppet in the finished cloak pocket kind of smacked me in the face with how the story is coming to reality. More surprisingly, I love the way it's looking!</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMlr3ztRZP7DjkJ0URY7qNridavr1Pf6WT1u4J5gFeyknqPXqLYKPW40U9SPDzg_R40Ix4xk068alXzwIuT5g6BBiBPFFP88f9SahKXp8RM5sr98egeIt_pjB10AAskxPwpxBD6fZjp69lPQhcVegflVNcWVzS73AGTsQVcWWkkfSGg9KMwkX5/s4160/20230930_151446.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMlr3ztRZP7DjkJ0URY7qNridavr1Pf6WT1u4J5gFeyknqPXqLYKPW40U9SPDzg_R40Ix4xk068alXzwIuT5g6BBiBPFFP88f9SahKXp8RM5sr98egeIt_pjB10AAskxPwpxBD6fZjp69lPQhcVegflVNcWVzS73AGTsQVcWWkkfSGg9KMwkX5/s320/20230930_151446.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbaGgwXXjWjD0dX9kXWWxIXSvVb8gxoowQ4ktJw2NHZdVxTIo73n1WYFEH61zAJuYiiwyq1UqKYTQKJzF7c1cevtHj4B5EAJFs1Hy67xxBA4kt4MY2PdtoPD96Bfqs6NAphL8tHQQUBYqmJFNo71eOommGUh-1ydcnBydlqE9glpOVGML4nXwf/s4160/20230930_185735.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbaGgwXXjWjD0dX9kXWWxIXSvVb8gxoowQ4ktJw2NHZdVxTIo73n1WYFEH61zAJuYiiwyq1UqKYTQKJzF7c1cevtHj4B5EAJFs1Hy67xxBA4kt4MY2PdtoPD96Bfqs6NAphL8tHQQUBYqmJFNo71eOommGUh-1ydcnBydlqE9glpOVGML4nXwf/s320/20230930_185735.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Shelley Noblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10968333057020378002noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25158433.post-42507233110369930992023-09-29T10:32:00.006-07:002023-09-29T11:11:23.344-07:00What's in Rana's Pocket?<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGlqQs5PFEFdgVU7DJZUdSLeC-IQVfWNA89UAScVJtrvkucAzDk1u1UCcnqXyvMsmhcKBM4AE1Lip5OP4GATLsKVVV9TqLZA5P8LQxAkw8Gq0c3VFPKRrdnncwUGmxFbeBrVX8TG5Y19Ynm1McZ0oVe657cf7VOB5_dOrUIfuaqrFm9y3tYuUA/s4160/20230910_170925.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3120" data-original-width="4160" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGlqQs5PFEFdgVU7DJZUdSLeC-IQVfWNA89UAScVJtrvkucAzDk1u1UCcnqXyvMsmhcKBM4AE1Lip5OP4GATLsKVVV9TqLZA5P8LQxAkw8Gq0c3VFPKRrdnncwUGmxFbeBrVX8TG5Y19Ynm1McZ0oVe657cf7VOB5_dOrUIfuaqrFm9y3tYuUA/w640-h480/20230910_170925.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH71aSa2hPaSYiYD-ipbGh5EVIYiTRLNCYH45TXO6eMj1XxMH3h5PZQjrblVbb-MWY1L9EFOJx2w4ObQ8AU3qRld8O30OrhH2gF3cNnxKmMYld57Xrj15PqriVsMPF8nAPFWqR_-16hsxmtTf9VDYM88nH-1sTiLaUrFGlBka5BhWjVDZsOmbW/s1080/img01808b_slideshow.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH71aSa2hPaSYiYD-ipbGh5EVIYiTRLNCYH45TXO6eMj1XxMH3h5PZQjrblVbb-MWY1L9EFOJx2w4ObQ8AU3qRld8O30OrhH2gF3cNnxKmMYld57Xrj15PqriVsMPF8nAPFWqR_-16hsxmtTf9VDYM88nH-1sTiLaUrFGlBka5BhWjVDZsOmbW/w640-h640/img01808b_slideshow.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>What gets collected and left in the pockets of her apron as she potters about the garden? Its ceiling, as does its floor, needs redoing, so I'm further superficially abusing the room a bit while it's used as the exclusive 1/2L set stage area. I decided to staple up various fabrics as the furthest back layer of the sky. The patches will get painted with random housepaint to blend into a pale blue-to-black gradient.<div><br /></div><div>Down below, the cottage set is getting its expansion into an edge-to-edge landscape setting for it. The detail in the ground, grass, and flowers will match the cottage just around it but fade into rough fields of color as the distance increases. The distant landscape will appear blurry due to how it will be photographed, so spending full time and energy there would be wasteful. Here Kyelynn and I are team-sawing off the corners of the extension planks attached to the set table built by <a href="https://notesfromhalfland.blogspot.com/2012/10/halfland-hero-dick-kaneshiro.html" target="_blank">Dick Kaneshiro</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Big items have been removed from the room and used elsewhere to make as much room as possible. Last month, I was able to haul away a 300-pound steel library card catalog drawer unit that had been used as a <a href="https://notesfromhalfland.blogspot.com/2012/10/shops-in-shape.html" target="_blank">materials organizer. </a>But since the sets have now all been built (!), the sheer weight of it could be pared down to save the house. I also decided to move the old baker's rack that held the heavy cement puppet molds completely out. The molds were triple-bagged <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxKXKWhnu46-Sbg8cJs8MmRStj9sT8gDcKpVM09WOnOz9xZmiit5rWwHysLkRmS4GilOIIlAqIvSIX4r1s_TsSakq5CDeJU-Zomn4LgL_M4VVvo_rqpssV3CVJUl6lA8ny9D72_KmjSiUyh3C1NKhA22pffB322WHH_xUFPgJdNQuWhbrFfLCU/s4160/20230903_155023.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxKXKWhnu46-Sbg8cJs8MmRStj9sT8gDcKpVM09WOnOz9xZmiit5rWwHysLkRmS4GilOIIlAqIvSIX4r1s_TsSakq5CDeJU-Zomn4LgL_M4VVvo_rqpssV3CVJUl6lA8ny9D72_KmjSiUyh3C1NKhA22pffB322WHH_xUFPgJdNQuWhbrFfLCU/w300-h400/20230903_155023.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br />against moisture and stored outside while the rack went to the garden to become a greenhouse.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0bJE3FvBmh9fREs7-Qd5yIQMF3As0IzlDUaLzO_wiMQzd-PTaUA_-oyG50t4KakfRpBecUAsiyQIkvJvckxyIk3u95eWg1JDYDty-CmI0S-WeGfiI7-85MljdUO_FaHl7Gut7G1aiVm0Cf2jPanGDoPtM-ue1deGaRJtu11cIX-Bu8ji5p4SC/s2560/20230824_165210.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="2560" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0bJE3FvBmh9fREs7-Qd5yIQMF3As0IzlDUaLzO_wiMQzd-PTaUA_-oyG50t4KakfRpBecUAsiyQIkvJvckxyIk3u95eWg1JDYDty-CmI0S-WeGfiI7-85MljdUO_FaHl7Gut7G1aiVm0Cf2jPanGDoPtM-ue1deGaRJtu11cIX-Bu8ji5p4SC/w400-h300/20230824_165210.jpg" width="400" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPi79jxsfWx72W01XRRunpyGsMiK2ut_SJYEd68V-gp1bYdA_TElfl-MXOfQ7RxpRO-1IZw9bu5TQ86qWZ_A1ehrtri0nfh3nIsPNc11zJ-GMwCiLqw5WccO_JFyra5SNwk2dalmGdnB5450dlTaLZPZDTqUO7qLk91L0Pl3gIJ-0qGpQ1eQBO/s2560/20230824_164825.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2560" data-original-width="1920" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPi79jxsfWx72W01XRRunpyGsMiK2ut_SJYEd68V-gp1bYdA_TElfl-MXOfQ7RxpRO-1IZw9bu5TQ86qWZ_A1ehrtri0nfh3nIsPNc11zJ-GMwCiLqw5WccO_JFyra5SNwk2dalmGdnB5450dlTaLZPZDTqUO7qLk91L0Pl3gIJ-0qGpQ1eQBO/w300-h400/20230824_164825.jpg" width="300" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqIk1PYq-ehzKqz1h-uJbqzz4CrSV62HqllAd4xobLrd8PFFo4-YCffAMV2i-Hx9Kgp3eFcCcyEUUj9EXqrxKUC7O8xzuLMBJSBCC74BUdqQ4nS-apYmKIxF34y-quWxIa2X2BDFgW6C_d3UqEbIxzrWQrKAN2_yuBWABDJL_9TUrPCTh0HVX5/s2560/20230824_213413.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2560" data-original-width="1920" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqIk1PYq-ehzKqz1h-uJbqzz4CrSV62HqllAd4xobLrd8PFFo4-YCffAMV2i-Hx9Kgp3eFcCcyEUUj9EXqrxKUC7O8xzuLMBJSBCC74BUdqQ4nS-apYmKIxF34y-quWxIa2X2BDFgW6C_d3UqEbIxzrWQrKAN2_yuBWABDJL_9TUrPCTh0HVX5/w300-h400/20230824_213413.jpg" width="300" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSZExel-VQFAeSdHIL5pmYLOkYMskRLCjKK3L4Az4Lll3sEwdUCPhWEfuiifODYAU0dfr9yCSaawZXCNXnzEOajITQ351y3NBv7X0-UOXWXRNPWgAbMVstp98toV4ATrwQp_5KB5iaGFPHO5r7LoQCUHR5lXPB0_b23i2DgSHfcvZ-BPBeMT7e/s4160/20230905_220628.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSZExel-VQFAeSdHIL5pmYLOkYMskRLCjKK3L4Az4Lll3sEwdUCPhWEfuiifODYAU0dfr9yCSaawZXCNXnzEOajITQ351y3NBv7X0-UOXWXRNPWgAbMVstp98toV4ATrwQp_5KB5iaGFPHO5r7LoQCUHR5lXPB0_b23i2DgSHfcvZ-BPBeMT7e/w480-h640/20230905_220628.jpg" width="480" /></a></div></div><div><br /></div><div>The reference images pertaining to the landscape are posted in the room. Too much? No. It was an original story written and photographed by the captivating Ms. Wright over the year I was born and published in 1963 by Random House New York via the personal agenda of Editor Bennett Cerf. <p></p><p>I've had my copy since then and poured over every astounding image in it regularly. It was always near me. It was a large format hardbound book at 12.5" tall by 10" wide. I've always used the back of it as my art desk. It was, in a sense, shameful of me to use something so precious as a convenient place, my only available hard surface, on which to draw or glue things, marking the cover and inevitably damaging the corners, yellowing the paper with exposure to air as I tore especially lovely spreads out to hang right in front of me at all times.</p><p>But for most of my life, it wasn't precious, just a common, oversized childhood book. <span style="color: #c27ba0; font-size: large;">Only now do I realize how extraordinary it was.</span></p><p>What it has become for me now is a bewildering achievement of fine art. Ms. Wright's other work (that I know of) is of zero interest to me. She made a popular series of other B&W photograph-illustrated original stories that mean nothing to me and are even a bit troublesome. They were based around a doll and her teddy's adventures. Many were published, and these are what she is most known for. But to me, they are nothing but creepy in the way dead dolls can be.</p><p>I have read two biographies about Dare Wright, Jean<span style="font-family: georgia;"> Nathan's <span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-size: 14px;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Life-Lonely-Doll-Search/dp/0312424922" target="_blank">The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll: The Search for Dare Wright</a>,</span> and Brooke Ashley's <span style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-size: 14px;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dare-Wright-Lonely-Brook-Ashley/dp/1733431209/ref=sr_1_1?crid=W2JQV1F0XZDL&keywords=dare+wright+brooke+ashley&qid=1692127044&s=books&sprefix=dare+wright+brooke+ashey%2Cstripbooks%2C149&sr=1-1" target="_blank">Dare Wright And The Lonely Doll</a>, b</span></span><span face=""Amazon Ember", Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #0f1111; font-size: 14px;">oth of </span>which, among other things, explore the more bizarre aspects of her life and the strange dynamic between herself and her moth</span>er specifically. There is plenty there to wonder about. However, in the case of Lona, her most magical, ephemeral nature was expressed to perfection.</p><p>She was lovely, she was delicate, and she lived her whole life a virgin (save perhaps being made an intimate to her mother.) She made her remarkable costumes and clothes and was featured as a cover and editorial model in top magazines; this is her on the cover of Cosmo back in the day.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkFMt9_5_nQRvN15zBmSPNPMF6A-My5ry0wCclUobSC1xvTirc7IL_wyDjkUPk3CVVb0Wa9SCOIFfbFJViXgUF4zGCiiVSlkJHEtdLyDHuNTtkUO-oYcWs6jhkdzBzgCJC2iuV6FZ8mHj7UpsXj4yhRWZbqgehCIvzq99rleHlxB92etmYV2yC/s935/Dare-Cosmo-Cover-JPG.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="935" data-original-width="697" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkFMt9_5_nQRvN15zBmSPNPMF6A-My5ry0wCclUobSC1xvTirc7IL_wyDjkUPk3CVVb0Wa9SCOIFfbFJViXgUF4zGCiiVSlkJHEtdLyDHuNTtkUO-oYcWs6jhkdzBzgCJC2iuV6FZ8mHj7UpsXj4yhRWZbqgehCIvzq99rleHlxB92etmYV2yC/w478-h640/Dare-Cosmo-Cover-JPG.jpg" width="478" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small; text-align: left;">©Dare Wright Media, LLC</span></div><p>She had several platonic/dramatic/tragedic love affairs, breaking hearts along the way. And while some have observed in her work, <span style="color: #c27ba0;"><span style="font-size: large;">everything she made carried a kind of erotic tension</span>.</span></p><p>Every image in Lona is pure sex. Not in any way intentionally, mind you. It was just that her artistry demanded an allure. It's as if her own unconscious longing for erotic release, tempered by the restraints within her life, generated a visceral effect on the viewer. <span style="color: #a64d79; font-size: large;">The beauty of each image is desire and the total fulfillment of that desire.</span></p><p>But in Lona, a fairy tale centered around a princess (Dare's Goddaughter and estate heir Brooke Ashley's wonderful book explains where the actual doll came from, and other extensive amounts of tasty backstories and photos.) Dare uses the slender doll and herself as the main character triumphing against dark forces to save her enchanted kingdoms...</p><p>—All of this writing so far is an unexpected prelude to my intended purpose for this post. As I prepare to go to the beach location to shoot the opening sequences for Halfland, I wanted to explain to you <span style="color: #073763; font-size: large;">why I needed rocks to be on the beach</span> vs. just sand.</p><p>At the top above, you can see some of the beach scene spreads from Lona. Dare, and her mother had been shooting the book in Europe that summer in and around castles in France. The beach scenes were shot on the rocky beaches of Brittany. I don't know when the natural rock outcroppings began to look like giant terror dogs to Dare or if the locations were chosen for that, but the end result of her skills in the darkroom, decades before digital editors would appear, is breathtaking.</p><p>I plan to attach <a href="https://notesfromhalfland.blogspot.com/2023/08/finish-tale-big-kyra-arrives.html" target="_blank">my large Kyra puppet</a> to a rock on my local rocky beach for my scenes in a kind of homage to Dare's Lona and what it means to me aesthetically. It's one way I feel kindred to her in what I create now. I am proud that I <a href="https://notesfromhalfland.blogspot.com/2013/12/mirror-mirror.html" target="_blank">reverse-engineered how some of her images were shot into a carnival mirror</a> to capture a unique distortion effect. Since then, I've been relating to how she created Lona more and more. It's gone from an unobtainable magic trick to something I can now strive to accomplish myself. Very gratifying.</p><p>And here is the second point intended for this post: Dare used whatever means she had while making the images. The hand emerging from the sand holding the conch shell above was a random individual she knew from Ocracoke Island, the second beach location for the book. Perfectly cast as the messenger from the story, I never questioned who it was until reading Ms. Ashley's book and finding out his name and who he was to her. He was just part of the magical story to me until then. But now, after knowing, I see how I can also <span style="color: #e69138; font-size: large;">make my images with whatever is at hand</span>.</p><p>I include the shot of the prince transforming from a frog on the right above because I learned from Ms. Ashley's book who he was and how he came to be cast in the image as the ultimate prince. It's hilarious. He didn't want to be there. Again, proving the point, Dare, as the artist she was, made it work with what she had.</p><p>That concludes this post on Ms. Dare Wright, my creative hero, my inspirational role model, and, I feel, my art friend.</p><p><span style="font-size: xx-small;">*I have other inspiring favorite image-makers, such as <b>Maxfield Parris</b>h, an American painter whose neo-romantic murals and illustrations spoke to a similar kind of <b>exquisite beauty</b>. His process is extremely interesting, and I plan to post on that in the future.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: xx-small;">**I've bought several copies of the out-of-print book from eBay and other sources to pull them apart and fashion <b>all 34 complete spreads in the book into boxed archival sleeves.</b> In working on that project, I became aware of the magnificent way in which the images were used in the book's layout. They were NOT cropped to fit the large pages at all. Most of them <b>spilled over onto the neighboring page</b> in unusual divisions, creating more intimacy and more engagement for the reader. I plan to show you when done.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: xx-small;">***All images from the book, as well as the magazine cover image, are property of </span><span style="font-size: x-small;">©Dare Wright Media, LLC</span></p><p><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: xx-small;">**** Hmmm, the dogs in the rocks used in the book may have been <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1kW8kzojf0" target="_blank">sculpted in the years before 1910 by a hermit priest in the area</a>. He carved over 300 figures in the living granite rock on the coast o<span style="font-family: georgia;">f </span><span style="font-family: georgia;">Rothéneuf with the aid of an elderly helper after his left side became paralyzed from a stroke at age 55. I scoured every video available of these sculptures and never saw the dogs as she found them but then again, her photos were from 60 years earlier and erosion could have worn them away that close to the surf.</span></span></p><div>All views expressed here are my own.</div>Shelley Noblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10968333057020378002noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25158433.post-50120208954574201012023-08-09T13:39:00.004-07:002023-08-09T13:40:18.594-07:00Barking Up The Right Tree!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAlzH1NTvzfSBakpr66JwBXVq7FMiiJetsCu2xYhIrHEA6quYeDC-SAtpJpoZ7ZBKXWI765awdTsMr85C1QnpxFHXQrTutaYhRHBWXE8FPDwvrOue1pkhvwFhajLZ5bGNH5WD2P3PnaJh2UtY5tNN8_-fnx-hAUKjKHdk0VezFATRZu8kxCbif/s1148/Birch%20Bark.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="508" data-original-width="1148" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAlzH1NTvzfSBakpr66JwBXVq7FMiiJetsCu2xYhIrHEA6quYeDC-SAtpJpoZ7ZBKXWI765awdTsMr85C1QnpxFHXQrTutaYhRHBWXE8FPDwvrOue1pkhvwFhajLZ5bGNH5WD2P3PnaJh2UtY5tNN8_-fnx-hAUKjKHdk0VezFATRZu8kxCbif/w640-h284/Birch%20Bark.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;">Last July, I ordered 5 ounces of birch tree bark from <span style="background-color: #fafafa;">Valliant, Oklahoma, as examples to follow out of paper for the main Halfland set background (upper right).</span></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;"><span style="background-color: #fafafa;">Upper left is a frame from a Canadian vlog I follow. This makes eyes follow the viewer in person or on film. The tiny clear glass marble above is stationary on the surface. Only the camera angles shifted north, east, south, and west. You may notice how it looks as though the black dot pupil seems to move in each direction. (top row, second from right below, shows how an aqua paper circle was glued to the back of the marble. A hole was pierced, and black velvet dot was glued over the hole).<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0oy3N71jDIGwrVB7hJ9RnxwObdSNY5VcP3E37vbaEwp-TnujXnEOOtU93H_cWr6VaNHHJjXi5dB8RzJn1Vz--SpYAn3Emc7xxWcVIY7-lyluEWOyapCIncOf36I6AvxZh092MlyLY6zZecx2KoWuJ_R_78JGEL7RcbhQoTHdz286zC7Eb7tlZ/s1150/Kyra%20Eyes.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="655" data-original-width="1150" height="365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0oy3N71jDIGwrVB7hJ9RnxwObdSNY5VcP3E37vbaEwp-TnujXnEOOtU93H_cWr6VaNHHJjXi5dB8RzJn1Vz--SpYAn3Emc7xxWcVIY7-lyluEWOyapCIncOf36I6AvxZh092MlyLY6zZecx2KoWuJ_R_78JGEL7RcbhQoTHdz286zC7Eb7tlZ/w640-h365/Kyra%20Eyes.png" width="640" /></a></div>This was cool, but I found it easier to hollow out a ball of white airdry clay, punching out a deep black velvet paper pupil (edges have to be sharp like a real aperture), and doming over with a thick clear acrylic and let dry.<p></p><p>For the smaller stop-motion size reproduction of the larger mermaid puppet, I printed out the photo of the sculpt to size, cut out the eye openings in it, and use that as a mask for precise sizing of the smaller eyes.</p><p>Had to match the pale aqua color for the iris. I had micro caviar black glass beads, smaller than poppy seeds, that I forced into a pierced hole in the small white clay shapes. This meant the circumference of the beads made the pupils very black and perfectly rounded. Both essential qualities for pupils at any size.</p><p><br /></p><p>PS: the gold leaf irises also looked good on Kyra, but the pretty aqua hit more cohesively in the end. Note that any color put on top of a metallic is lifted and luminous. It's a neat trick to keep in mind for the right puppet.</p>Shelley Noblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10968333057020378002noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25158433.post-82257946446798419182023-08-08T23:30:00.007-07:002023-08-11T09:23:30.103-07:00Skinned Alive!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHl0z7jTi3cgde6DkSr7ZEjl4T2KIlSqTAsmKVTgFjDGIiQ7ovIt1FdL8LLm0tuCNasiIs4zOY1GInvH0FhQKLICddSBgekMJBtuWVs9hpNUMeSkDvVqx2bMeIghymMMsU9rdqHLzyO3_FPMF2uiT8kDbWWDwyr7h11PMzatSd39toJ9JxIx-c/s1158/Scale%201.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="788" data-original-width="1158" height="436" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHl0z7jTi3cgde6DkSr7ZEjl4T2KIlSqTAsmKVTgFjDGIiQ7ovIt1FdL8LLm0tuCNasiIs4zOY1GInvH0FhQKLICddSBgekMJBtuWVs9hpNUMeSkDvVqx2bMeIghymMMsU9rdqHLzyO3_FPMF2uiT8kDbWWDwyr7h11PMzatSd39toJ9JxIx-c/w640-h436/Scale%201.png" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Fish skin! Had to match the small Kyra puppet tail exactly for this to work. I used an Italian four-way stretch wool jersey fabric I bought to make something to wear out of but Halfland comes first. I clipped it to a piece of board, laid plastic fruit bags out against it and smeared them over with heavy body matte medium and blue pearl paint applied with a card. When the mesh is pulled off, the net leaves a nice cycloid scale texture on the fabric. Third from left above, shows me sewing together two mesh bags to create a larger piece of fish scale fabric. I was going to try to hide the flaws that seam left in the scale pattern but instead I featured it right down the center of the fishtail, as if coloration. (See my inspirational fish skin third from left bottom row above before I cooked it for lunch.)<p></p><p>Once dry, the fabric was stretched tightly over the tail form, fins were added, seams finessed. Much like mosaic tiles, the gaps the mesh bag left on the fabric were filled with water putty. Covered that layer with glue-soaked fabric then another layer of paper mache to match her finished face texture.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPoX7hdouBp4wsGkwbrAFycZR8V2quCv8j4l6gct7hZBYG6z0sSnBKuNoy38dK6ejwQSF14dfLI1limTdt77LfFy0Xpbf32CjaBvwdSnHsnLOZ3mdXKXyAnmafVOBRBe1U89Hfe6oaJwz142jYvzFs0Rs1QCU--ecJr-AUKlhlrfIBTi9dlIHr/s1152/Arms%202.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="806" data-original-width="1152" height="448" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPoX7hdouBp4wsGkwbrAFycZR8V2quCv8j4l6gct7hZBYG6z0sSnBKuNoy38dK6ejwQSF14dfLI1limTdt77LfFy0Xpbf32CjaBvwdSnHsnLOZ3mdXKXyAnmafVOBRBe1U89Hfe6oaJwz142jYvzFs0Rs1QCU--ecJr-AUKlhlrfIBTi9dlIHr/w640-h448/Arms%202.png" width="640" /></a></div><br />It was another back-and-forth struggle to resize, cut open, excise, re-join, and unify her body. It looked clunky for so long that I considered quitting the whole project. I was doing my absolute best, but it wasn't looking good enough to use. I recalled this happening repeatedly, though, so I knew enough to keep grinding. Letting my hands work without my head knowing what they were doing. It remained a flop until I got the clothes to work, then all the finishing details came on board, and it suddenly looked right. Suddenly, I saw her sitting on the table, and there was nothing more to change. She worked.<p></p></div><div>I set about mixing the colors (bottom right) into a warm blood flesh clay pink for the insides of the arms and hands while the backs were made of an ochre base color, then dark blue-black brown washed all over. The highlights were scrubbed back to the ochre and pink (below left).</div><div><br /></div><div>Despite the top coats, the paper skin kept ripping when the figure was shifted into new poses. I kept filling the tears with glue and repainting. And because I hadn't made an articulate armature, the pose changes wouldn't hold. I installed metal plates in the backs of her arms and squeezed them in place at her sides by hooking them together with a small bungee across the back (below right).</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGkZ3yHCod2-h831rdh-PavzNamMqD3V2Ev1QjzIQKR8yqxr2iSlM0XHOa1ovm45MsOSOxGyWQCJgAbSr9rJIM6SsKx5z-tXvULKeCF6OA-DqQMkL3AS-1KRgdNxIjaF-A8Wtg7lH0C5Nvy8hgeIEjcp1u3B3cCIPZuMoT4VnkV8NhL3dYWqbz/s4160/20230807_071156_HDR.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGkZ3yHCod2-h831rdh-PavzNamMqD3V2Ev1QjzIQKR8yqxr2iSlM0XHOa1ovm45MsOSOxGyWQCJgAbSr9rJIM6SsKx5z-tXvULKeCF6OA-DqQMkL3AS-1KRgdNxIjaF-A8Wtg7lH0C5Nvy8hgeIEjcp1u3B3cCIPZuMoT4VnkV8NhL3dYWqbz/w300-h400/20230807_071156_HDR.jpg" width="300" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghA334yFI2zXNd_kl9KKYtdtq4XEL05zksIf4WKsoQP-PitzWROtZUyQOaRFymPPCeE2wdlvPTvVKhmOC9b3-InxoWoqgoIrJ4xtcpZc5D9KamFpgH1jQ5iB3_9aN2QrUiVZ-T7-thg8XboWJOzAGAZjybWjXN9I2Dmg6fiXGUpBy16NvAFe79/s4160/20230806_162103.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghA334yFI2zXNd_kl9KKYtdtq4XEL05zksIf4WKsoQP-PitzWROtZUyQOaRFymPPCeE2wdlvPTvVKhmOC9b3-InxoWoqgoIrJ4xtcpZc5D9KamFpgH1jQ5iB3_9aN2QrUiVZ-T7-thg8XboWJOzAGAZjybWjXN9I2Dmg6fiXGUpBy16NvAFe79/w300-h400/20230806_162103.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div>She matches the other Halfland puppets in crude paper mache style.
